about samantha

I design jewelry for myself, both literally and emotionally. I get great satisfaction from the ability to visualize  “wing-like earrings” and then make them myself in the workshop my husband built for me.  The process of taking a design from a concept in my head through experimenting with the metals to completing a new piece is exciting.

When I was a kid, I used to take apart inexpensive jewelry from thrift shops to rework them, mixing and matching pieces, to make something new.  For years, I’ve taken metalsmith classes and making pieces for family, friends and myself.  After years of compliments and encouragement from friends, family and my biggest fan and supporter, my husband Steve, I’ve started Samantha Edson.

I have been working in the fashion industry for 20 years.  For the last ten years, I’ve been on the design side where I’ve learned to merge concepts and trends to turn them into tangible pieces that evoke an emotional response from a potential wearer.

All Samantha Edson jewelry is benchmade in Berkeley and Oakland, California.  It is important to me that each piece and it’s components -ear wires, closures, tags and, in some cases, chain- are made individually and by hand.

I want my jewelry to be easy to wear.  These will be the go-to pieces that you can easily throw on before walking out the door.  You will feel the weight of the pieces but they should be comfortable, not heavy.  I intend them to move with your body, adding a little bit of drama to your day or evening.  They are clean pieces but the mixed materials and multiple layers carry interest and depth.  These are modern, organic designs that look great worn alone for an elegant look or can make a bigger statement when worn in multiples.  The designs are not based on trends but on what feels good and right to me at the time. As my work progresses, my designs will continue to evolve.
